Artist Statement

My goal as a visual artist is to express through my artworks the love & reverence that I have for "America's Heartland". I've lived in South Dakota for over 35 years and am inspired by the diverse landscapes that change with every season! I'm in awe of the tall grasses and colorful wildflowers that grow naturally here on the plains, and the incredible beauty & vastness of the skies from sunrise to sunset! I'm intrigued by the diversity of the people who have chosen to settle in this region (past & present), by the objects that scatter the country-sides, from the machinery yard dinosaurs to the barnyard critters! I enjoy greeting the farm animals that peer across the fence at me; We seem to share a mutual curiousity for one another. I also get much pleasure in exploring the abandoned homesteads and other buildings that scatter the countryside, imagining better times when families lived there; Children were playing in the yard while mom hung-up the wash on the clothesline, and dad was working in the field! I've chosen to express my love for this diverse region thru my works, by combining prepared mixed-media grounds with the oils and oil glazes that I enjoy most painting with. I've experimented for many years trying to find just the right combination of materials to best share through my paintings, my passion for life here in " The Heartland"!
